Seeking the light and playful

Today I had lunch with a woman that I haven’t seen in a couple of years. It’s totally my fault. I started working at a local church and the time I had free to meet with her and study Greek fell away. But today we met to talk about writing and the weird things that can happen when you stay in your head too much.

-I shared my deep love of lifestyle blogs with her. Cup of Jo is one of my favorite online spaces.
-We talked about how difficult it can be to connect our faith to our daily lives.
-We talked about our desire to be private people who don’t have to splash our lives on the internet so that people will read our writing.

I also read some older posts from my blog tonight. Posts from right after my almost-eight-year-old was born, posts about the garden I’ve been working on since we moved (the groundhogs mowed that garden down last year).

Right now on Substack, we are finishing up a book club on Practicing Christian Doctrine by Dr. Beth Felker Jones and I’m deep in a series about the parallel stories in Genesis 19 and Judges 19. It’s been a great experience this spring, but not exactly light or playful.

So here are some light and playful spaces in my life:

-My berry patch (which I will try to get a picture of this week)
-A run to the creek after school when middle school soccer was unexpectedly not on our schedule

-These poppies I painted at a friend’s birthday party

This book
-Breakfast with a friend who is moving to work with a church plant

Here’s to being out of our heads sometimes, instead at lunches with others, teaching PE at the elementary schools (which I will be doing two days a week through the end of the school year) and growing something.
