Klara and the Sun

I stayed up too late last night to finish Klara and the Sun. I’ve never wished for a book club more. It’s a dystopian story, set in a future where kids are genetically “lifted” and possibly damaged at the same time. Some people are post-employment. Life is fragmented and isolated. And people buy Artificial Friends as companions for their children.

Here’s my burning question at the end of the story. [Obviously there are spoilers ahead.] Why did the sun heal Josie?

In a technological world where they debate what makes up a person, the AF engaged in worship-like feelings and actions toward the sun and she receives her request. Is it possible the AF had more human-like tendencies than the people did at this point?
